What does assessment in the visual arts look like in a standards based grading system?
This is the 4 point grading scale that is used in our assessments:
1 - Minimal
2 - Basic
3 - Proficient
4 - Advanced
How does this apply to students?
This grading scale is explained to students and there is a visual reminder in the classroom for them to see what a 1, 2, 3 or 4 would look like with an accompanying description.

The standards we use in the classroom are based on national art education standards.
These are the standards that may show up on your student's report card for their art classes:
1.)Visual Thinking (<-This is the category for the standard)
- Visual Media (<-This is how a student uses materials i.e. neatness, completeness)
- Visual Elements and Principals (<-This is basic art concepts we cover, i.e. shape, line, etc.)
2.)Art History and Culture
- Identify and understand the significance of art from different cultures
- Identify artists and works of art
3.)Art Design and Criticism
- Effectively evaluates the quality of art work (self or others)
